Accessible Wetroom in Carlow

CLIENT GOALS

The client required a bathroom upgrade to support changing mobility needs while avoiding a clinical or institutional look. The goal was to design a wetroom that delivered comfort, ease of use, and safety without compromising on warmth or style.

THE EXISTING CONDITIONS

The original bathroom was not suitable for the client’s long-term needs, with a step-in shower and limited space for movement or support. The finishes were outdated and didn’t reflect the client’s desire for a more inviting, home-like atmosphere.

THE PLAN

We developed a layout that offered open, unobstructed access to all elements, with safety features discreetly integrated into the design. Materials were chosen for their durability and low maintenance, while the finishes—wood tones and warm neutrals—kept the room feeling cosy and residential.

DESIGN & AESTHETIC

The open shower space is bordered by a clear glass screen, allowing full visibility and maintaining the room’s spacious feel. A folding shower seat and grab rails were installed in matching finishes to blend with the overall design.

FUNCTION & AMBIANCE

This zero-threshold setup ensures wheelchair or walker accessibility. The built-in seat offers convenience and safety, and the grab rails provide essential support—all while keeping the aesthetic clean and uncluttered.

Warm Wood-Effect Finishes

 

DESIGN & AESTHETIC

The floor features durable porcelain tiles with a wood-grain texture, bringing natural warmth into the room. The floating vanity complements this tone with a natural oak finish.

FUNCTION & AMBIANCE

These finishes are not only slip-resistant and hardwearing, but they also contribute to a homely feel that avoids the typical sterile wetroom aesthetic. The LED-lit mirror enhances visibility while doubling as a design statement.

Work Included

This renovation involved a complete reconfiguration of the bathroom space:

  • Removal of old fixtures and finishes

  • Full wetroom tanking and waterproofing installation

  • Installation of level-access walk-in shower with grab rails and fold-down seat

I would highly recommend Aidan Kelly Construction. Aidan and his team completed a challenging bathroom renovation in my home, to the highest standard and under a tough timeline. The bathroom was completely stripped and everything was replaced; plumbing, wiring, water heater, sanitary wear, floor and wall tiling, ceiling. No issue or request was a problem e.g. putting up wall tiles in herringbone pattern or the quartz bathroom vanity top arriving not cut for the sink! I love my new bathroom.
